CONGRATULATIONS to skippers from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey and USA arriving in the first three podium places for each category!

Following on the popularity of the three work-up cruises in Q1 2021, Sailonline’s new and developing format of Virtual Cruising in close association with Cruising Club of America (CCA) saw as the Q2 choice an ambitious cruise from Reykjavik, Iceland, to the historic Viking site of L’Anse aux Meadows, Nova Scotia, Canada – literally in the wake of Leif Ericsson!

In design the intention had been to create as simple a course as possible, with few mandatory waypoints, so that all erstwhile delivery skippers would have free rein to stop/start as and where they pleased, while seeking to attain optimal cruise performance. Rather than a simple start finish, which could have led participants into a typical N Atlantic race, three waypoints were included in the course which would replicate what delivery skippers were likely to do – safe havens in the far north Atlantic where, in inclement weather, boats and crews can safely wait out late spring storms. Unfortunately, for the first time in Sailonline’s history, a mark was found to be almost unroundable for some. Sailonline’s waypoints are rounded when a specific set of conditions are met – including direction of approach and crossing a bisecting line (a full explanation is in the Manual). It is also possible to unround a mark if you back-track over the rounded bisecting line. One of the few situations in which this could occur were those to be found at Cartwright Harbour and it was only as some skippers observed their “Leaderboard Ranking” (applicable only in Sailonline races) was slipping. As soon as this anomaly was identified, a message was posted to advise skippers to be extra careful when departing Cartwright Harbour. Fortunately, most of those who had been discountenanced by this first-in-fourteen-years occurrence were understanding and the cruise progressed to a successful close on 26 June, just over five weeks from the earliest possible start.

Your hosts for Sailonline and CCA’s virtual cruising are CCA_BuzzardsBill, Kipper1258, Zorba777 and RainbowChaser. The plan is for each Sailonline quarterly calendar to set aside 4-6 weeks for a virtual cruise. The format will develop and it is hoped that everyone participating will begin to understand the different way in which delivery skippers approach their task. Everyone who undertakes a virtual cruise, even if they make a pure race of it, are invited to enjoy this non-Championship, non-ranking format, and those new to Sailonline are welcome to enjoy learning and honing their skills here.

San Francisco to New York 2022
Cornelius Vanderbilt, who made his money - that his descendants enjoyed to spend sailing and racing yachts - by recognizing that getting from the East Coast to the West Coast of the USA was best done by rail, would have been more than a little amused to see SOL organizing yacht races over the very route by water he made redundant. It's about 13,000 nautical miles, which compares with less than 3000 statute miles by train! Six years ago, the best SOLers managed to complete the passage from San Francisco to New York in around 36 days, sailing our much-used veteran ocean greyhound, the Super Maxi 100. Time to try again, this time on the VO70. If you aim for a SOG of 18kn, it'll only take you a month.
