24 June 2021

Welcome to Sailonline’s racing in tall ships 2021 which sees the eleventh season of our association with Sail Training International. With the global pandemic still interfering in all things on-water, sadly 2021 will again see a high degree of flexibility in the programme of tall ships racing and it is expected that some, but hopefully not all, of our usual partnered races may have to be raced purely in virtual tall ships. Last year saw an influx of tall ships aficionados with truly competitive skills, challenging the best of our virtual top-guns, so if/as/when any of STI’s events are made virtual only, we can again expect to be challenged on our virtual waters by the crews and skippers of real tall ships!

Sailonline is running one Tall Ships series this year comprising a total of 7 races (allowing one discard). The seven races will be:

1. Sailonline’s Baltic Tall Ships - Race 1 – Klaipeda to Turku
2. Sailonline’s Baltic Tall Ships - Race 2 – Tallinn to Mariehamn
3. Sailonline’s Baltic Tall Ships - Race 3 – Mariehamn to Sczcecin
4. The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano Series - Race 1 – Falmouth to A Coruña
5. The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano Series - Race 2 – Lisbon to Cadiz
6. SCF White Sails of Peace Tall Ships Regatta - Race 1 – S Korea to Japan
7. SCF White Sails of Peace Tall Ships Regatta - Race 2 – Japan to Russia

As has become our custom, where a real Tall Ships series would include a Cruise-in-Company – a nice way of indicating that the ships are generally stooging around, swapping crews for shared experience and dropping into selected local ports along a coastline – we will be taking a break!

This virtual sailing experience runs hand in hand with Sail Training International's mission - the development and education of young people through the sail training experience, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background. Sail Training International and Sailonline both count heavily on volunteer support with financial gain excluded from the equation.

There are four classes of Tall Ship in the real races, ranging from the biggest Class A Square Rigged ships of more than 40m in length, down to training yachts of 9.14m. Sailonline has developed performance polars based on published data for several different tall ships, and usually races to compete against real Class A ships. If you are more accustomed to sailing, or not at all, the experience of racing a Tall Ship with its hugely tricky windward performance is truly challenging so the sooner you register to race on Sailonline and learn the technical basics of how to navigate and steer any boat, the better you will be when we start our Tall Ships Series 2021!

Sailonline’s 15th Birthday Balloon Race
Sailonline offers a huge variety of boats to sail in. One of the more unusual ones has got to be SOL's Balloon, which was polarized by past SOLmaster 76Trombones. Notably, the SOL Balloon will actually ‘sail’ in other directions other than straight downwind, although it will not 'sail' over land or beyond a 'beam reach'. Like in 2013 and 2018, we will be taking the Balloon across the Atlantic from St. John's and 'land' it in the sea off the Cliffs of Moher.
