Hi Sailors

I'm looking to start a Special Interest Group (SIG) with the aim of re-creating Brainaids work on categorising our members. My long term intention is to be able to use my data to create the sailing divisions we have spoken about for some time.
I have so far included in my database the races going back to last years Global Challenge Leg 1(34 races). My results are attached as pdf files.

Medal Winners
Top Podium Placers
Master Navigators

To create the category "Master Navigators" a sailor would have to have placed on the podium during these 34 races. This needs a little bit of work in that I believe that once a member reaches Master Navigator status he/she will remain a Master ad nauseum. In order to refine the extra divisions I need to have a set of criteria that I can apply.

For now I have created four divisions;

Master Navigator

OK. So for now I'm looking for members of the SIG that can assist in developing the database and other criteria further. I would like to eventually place this information in a separate SYC Members blog/website. I think it would be a nice value added experience for our club.

- I need someone with database experience because so far I'm playing with Excel. I have no experience with MSaccess.
- I need someone with graphic design abilities so that we can create icons for the sailing categories. My daughter is a designer but I want to throw this open to the SYC community
- I need someone that can create and manage a separate website that SOL can link to for our members to check out their progress. And here I'm really stupid!
- Most of all I need the SOL community to put forward their ideas so that this work can include the widest expectations.

etc etc

For now I'm restricting my work to SYC members because I see this as another reason for SYC membership.

See my email address below.

Fond Regards

George Snoek - Jawz

Medal Winners
I have most ofthe race results in excel and databases with a lot of the results
Thanks to Tyger for pointing out I have a problem with boat name changes :)
Ahh! Because my excel spreadsheet searches against boat names if there has been any name change your results will be inaccurate. The root cause of this is that Im copying the results off the race archives as I dont have access to the SOL data.

Please be a little patient as this is a work in progress. Id rather share the progress as I move along and keep the community interested than wait till its perfect.

Send me a mail and I will correct any errors.
Hi Sailors

I have almost finished my race records and can now post a file with the medal finishers over the lifetime of SOL. See attached.

PLEASE: Forgive me if I have made any errors. I do suspect that if members have competed under a different boat name by adding a prefix or suffix like _NZL eg.then my spreadsheet wont pick it up. I will get this right too in time!

As you will see our good friend brainaid is still top of the heap with 24 Gold medals out of 66 race starts.

Our most succesful sailor thus far is Winston with 17 Gold in 31 starts. 54%!!! What an incredible conversion rate!

Legends Both!!! :)

At the moment I am still working on;
- The nations of syc members
- I am adding a column to indicate the number of nautical miles sailed too
- I have my daughter making up samples of grade badges for my tentative gradings, Deckhand, Helmsman, Skipper and Master Navigator
- I am also constructing a blog website for myself that will make all of this available on line.

Great job indeed, and a very difficult one.
There is a fail: if you take the results from the race archive now, you obtain who is actually a SYC member, not when the race took place.
I miss some awesome sailors, Exmeromotu saying one.

I think there are no records about past SYC members in the database, which makes impossible this work as originally pretended.

Why not a hall of fame, regardless if they are (or were) SYC members or not? I think they all are part of SOL's history.

Forgive my terrible english :)

Hi DeBilbaoPues

You are right about Exmeromotu, another one is theviking71! 8 and 7 wins respectively.

I originally started this as a "motivational tool" to get members to join and remain as syc members so I have written my sort formula around current syc members. I have the exact placings of all the races whether the finishers are members or not, so the data is available.

Thanks for pointing this out! An extension to my work now is to re-format my excel charts to include non-members, but only as a means of logging the podium placers.

I like the idea of a "Hall of Fame" and this might still happen in time, but with the Hall of Fame I would suggest that our community make proposals for these members. Guys like Aaron Gage immediately come to mind as an example of sailors that we could nominate?

Hi SOLers

I have burnt some midnight oil and have now created a complete listing of all the winners and podium placers of all the races ever run in SOL.

Attached is a pdf of each race winner and the list of races he/she has won.

Attached is also a complete list of podium finishers.

And to assist in looking up the races here is a numerical list.

Baker Lake Ice Race 2022
Up north, it’s Winter, so time to put your skates on, but first you’ll have to airfreight them, your carbon spars, your mylar sails and your DN hull to Baker Lake, for a 109nm race, the first of 4 (3 to count) at high speed before the ice melts! Well inside the Arctic Circle, this is a cold, cold place, where the wind is rarely benign. No Performance Loss, so put your goggles on, wrap up well, and try to get round as quick as you can!

The Three Kings Race 2022
The Three Kings Offshore Race is a 520 nm challenge, in Farr 38s, from Auckland (Orakei) up and around the Three Kings Islands and then back to Auckland finishing where you started. Manawa Islands (Three Kings) are a group of 13 uninhabited islands about 25 nm northwest of Te Rerenga Wairua aka Cape Reinga. They're also about 250nm due north of Auckland, known also as the world's best diving and fishing locations (although hopefully, you won’t be fishing too much during the race, or diving for that matter) and it is just a beautiful yet rugged place that is a must see for anyone who loves the oceans.
