Board » Technical Discussion » Changes to sailonline.org

With new year there have been some changes to sailonline.org.

Most of the changes are not visible (yet) as they are in the database itself with ability now to track SYC membership per boat as opposed to previously only per user. This was actually quite big change as it involved handling the membership payments, boat registration, ranking, expiration reminders etc. If you have any issues or strange behaviour with them, please contact the admins.

The first visible change is that if you are a SYC member, the expiration date of your membership is now shown on the website, below the SYC membership flag.

Races are now included in the rankings only after the first boat has finished (fleet races) or after the race has been closed (timed races).

The "utility boats", Practice marks, sol and guest boats are now not included in the rankings and they are not counted to the amount of boats when counting DNC or DNS scores. When practice racing is active you can see that they all have ranking 9999.

Previously there was a small "feature" that when a boat started a race with a command during towback time, it was not marked correctly as started before the first command was issued after the race start (or the sailing engine decided to add a trace mark for that boat). This is why sometimes you would get the first turn after start free of performance hit but it is now fixed . All boats are marked as started the moment they start moving.
"Previously there was a small "feature" that when a boat started a race with a command during towback time...
...This is why sometimes you would get the first turn after start free of performance hit but it is now fixed."

Ahh, so this was not an undocumented feature, but a bug;)
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I'm right.
The archived race leaderboards have now changed so that there is an additional field "LOG" which is total of miles the boat has sailed in that race.

In fleet races LOG replaces "DBL" which doesn't mean much in old races anyway. In timed races LOG replaces "DTG" as only finished runs are timed.
Since yesterday the weather data updates to the client have been compressed and their size is reduced to roughly 40% of what they were before.
There now is a summary page for all races ever in SOL for SYC members.

It can be found via link "Summary of all results by.." in series ranking detail page (i.e. boats individual results for a series).

For example, here is summary for http://sailonline.org/series/all/RainbowChaser/
Excellent!

Many big thanks from my side to hmm, these latest improvements are great!

The summary page has been updated a bit, now including first ever race (finish) etc.

Unfortunately the total miles is probably bit off, basically it doesn't count the miles correctly when you cross IDL but adds miles for extra circumnavigation (on that latitude) for each crossing.

I will see if that can be fixed somehow, it would be an interesting number.

The reason for the problem is essentially same that I have explained here:

SSANZ Northern Triangle 2025 - Leg 1 - Auckland to Mangonui

Welcome to the Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand's 2025 Evolution Sails Northern Triangle series, and to this first leg of c 150nm, out of Auckland, north up the coast to Mangonui. In our Sailonline boathouse, our Young 11 has remained forever young. She is your boat of choice for the series, and we fully expect her to give the boats of today in the real-life SSANZ fleet a proper run for their money. The second and third race of the Triangle will start in full sync with the real fleet, so be aware that these start times will not be confirmed until after 60% of the real fleet have finished the prior leg!

Auckland to Noumea 2025

The ARCH competition is transitioning now from the Arabian Sea to the Pacific Ocean, featuring a 1000 nm route from Auckland to Nouméa. Organized by the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, the race last occurred in 2018 and was set to resume on May 25, 2024, after a lengthy hiatus. However, due to political unrest in New Caledonia, the event has been cancelled. Fortunately, those situations do not impact our virtual race, so prepare your Open 60 for another exciting adventure.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Dondra to Toamasina

Above you see a stratospheric balloon, that if only we had gribs at that altitude would get blasted along quite rapidly and predictably. Alas we just have our SOL balloon that sails rather lower to the sea and that we have crossed the Atlantic in, west to east, last year for the first time in the southern hemisphere. So much fun was had by all, that this year we will attempt the Indian Ocean, but in four legs. Another great piece of fiction, the voyages of Sinbad By Balloon not magic carpet, although you may need a bit of magic to make any progress at times. Pack your wicker basket full for your first leg of at least 2300nm from Sri Lanka to Madagascar; it’s not a picnic hamper, you could be in the air for longer than you hoped!

Barbados to Tristan da Cunha 2025

Sailonline is proud to present to our virtual sailors, an all new series RWW 2025 (Round our Water World). Sailing from remote island to remote island with forever only a faintly curving line between sea and sky on the horizon. "Dry land is not a myth". The series ranking uses best 7 from 8 races for scoring, and this first race, from Barbados to Tristan da Cunha, a 4000nm leg into the Southern Atlantic, will be sailed in ex-Volvo OD65s (version 3). The race is also part of the OCCH 2025, ranking best 10 from 12 races.
