Joao was one of life's true gentlemen. I 1st met him here in SOL and we became good friends. He helped me immensely from setting up Fifi to improving my general navigation technique.

After I stopped sailing here we continued to stay in touch. He gave me every encouragement he could with my photography. I have pages and pages of PMs of advice and suggested re-edits - all so supportive.

His heart was huge. He care for our society and would often vocalise injustices - particularly to disabled people.

I am sorry we never got to meet but Joao will be an influence on me and my photography for a long time to come. My respects to Miguel and his family.

Big Hugs Joao. Big hugs my friend.
Joao, my friend.

You went too soon. Godspeed and thanks for all your assistance.

Antonio
It is with great sadness that I hear this news. May you rest in peace. We will miss you Joao.

I was saddened to hear about Joao (psail). A valued and respected member of the SOL community. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends. Fair winds mate.
It is very sad news to know that my fellow countryman and good friend, João Malafaia, is no longer among us.
My condolences to his family. Rest in Peace.

I recall seeing psail on the waters over the years. He was a familiar boat to me and although I hadn't gotten to know him as some have, it's always sad to know a familiar competitor will no longer be sailing with us.

Very sad news this was, and we pray for his family.

I have found out Joao was one of the sources of sol's boathouse polars. I always wondered where they came from. So we have lost a great member of the SOL community, not only a competitor, but a contributor also.

RIP Joao Malafaia, 'psail'

Still shocked by the terrible news! Had quite a few professional chat with Joao and I will remember him for is clear and concise way of thinking. Like to remember him sailing, IRL or virtually, with the same spirit!

ciao
i don't find the right words, too sad, too shocked.
Rest in peace.....
A special friend who will be sadly missed....always kind thoughtful and helpful.
Fair winds and a safe passage we will always be in your wake....lest we forget.

Dear Joao,
I still do not realize what has happened to you, it is difficult to metabolize this news, but I want to imagine you who are sailing for an eternal trip around the world on a sailboat.
We have never met but, between us, there has always been a sincere friendship based on mutual respect and "goliardic relationships" that are part of our nature.
Opponent and friend, a loyal and sincere competitor always ready to "play psychologically" with his opponents: a great man and a great sailor who embodies all the best qualities of the perfect sportsman and the perfect family man.
Thank you for all you have been able to give me in these years of friendship.
"pressure Joao, Pressure, PRESSURE" !!! ...
You started too early but, sooner or later, I'll join you, remember that!
A big hug to you and your family.
Carlo Alberto

Current Races:

The Three Kings Race 2022
The Three Kings Offshore Race is a 520 nm challenge, in Farr 38s, from Auckland (Orakei) up and around the Three Kings Islands and then back to Auckland finishing where you started. Manawa Islands (Three Kings) are a group of 13 uninhabited islands about 25 nm northwest of Te Rerenga Wairua aka Cape Reinga. They're also about 250nm due north of Auckland, known also as the world's best diving and fishing locations (although hopefully, you won’t be fishing too much during the race, or diving for that matter) and it is just a beautiful yet rugged place that is a must see for anyone who loves the oceans.

Stockholm to St Petersburg 2022
Are you ready to race this course of about 431nm across the Baltic and into the Gulf of Finland, from one great historic city Stockholm to another St Petersburg?
The Gulf of Finland is still ice‑free, so board your J‑122s and prepare. Take care and keep a weather eye. The odd stray submarine or ice‑breaker may need to be avoided.
