It would be great to be able to run the Round britain & Ireland at the same time as the race, as it is now running in its third leg (just started).
Alternatively we could run an exercise afterwards with an Open 40, which is the current favorite and looking like an exciting boat.
tatimanere - good suggestion! There are some GE files uploaded by StuArt for a Round Britain so we will be looking at those. We just have to be careful not to run RORC races at the same time as they run them in reality, as they are a litigious organisation!!
OK, then we'll run it later; might sent a note to the Petit Bateau chatlist for the guys that are presently sailing the RB&I; they might want to do another run and post some useful advice on routing.
When would the race be run?
tatimanerere - I have been looking through the SOL race titles and the GE files laoded in the YahooGroup and it would appear that the two currently "available" options are either a non-stop round Britain (from StuArt) or a 5-part 1000 mile race which looks to have been run in 2008 (long before I was on SOL) with a start in Ijmuiden, Holland.

Attached here is the .kmz file that StuArt proposed - would you perhaps see if you think this would work? OR if you would prefer something closer to the IRL race then, subject to timings, lets come up with another option!!

Yes, I think as a start, the pinned lay out should work.
How would you plug in the weather as it would be useful to run it as a training session for anybody interested, maybe in the off seasons (3#), in the years that it isn't running in reality.
In those cases the weather should match the expected weather for the period of the season the race is usually run in.
I would suggest to run a trial run in about one month and make contact with some of the guys who are sailing the real thing now.
A number of them have done several installments already and it would be interesting to get a mix of real and virtual racers.
tatimanere - SOL can only input the weather as it arrives in the servers originating from NOAA.. no manipulation is possible. So if we were to run the race off-season we would just do so with the then-prevailing weather - could be fun in the depths of winter with gales/storms giving very strong winds!!

If one/more of your chums wanted to sail a part of this SOL race at the same time as us, at a more conditions-appropriate time of year, then we can always make a separate course and perhaps even link to their signal via Sailplanner (as was done with CG in The Twisted Race. The linking to a signal would need a separate discussion with the SOLgods but its all do-able!!

Sinbad Seeks Spices 2023
Having surveyed Arabia, Sinbad Al-SOL’er next invites you to race him on his second of seven epic voyages to every corner of the Indian Ocean and beyond, this time to seek spices in Zanzibar, departing from Xaafun, a trading post on the tip of the Horn of Africa since the days of the Mycenaeans and on through Roman times to the Nights of 1,001 of AL-Sail’or, Al-SOL’er’s illustrious ancestor. SOLing by the sun and the stars, aka seat-of-the-pants, the voyage will take you east as far as Praslin island, south as far as Anjouan, to Zanzibar’s Unguja for all things spices, but only back as far as Mogidishu – another exhausting 3000nm adventure, this time in Reichel/Pugh 66s.
