For all the sailors out there who have dreamed of racing boat v boat with no routing, "steathier" racing, a return to the early days of ocean racing, I propose a set of rules for an unofficial race within the race:

* No boats to use software routing
* Position and ranking updates will be be available to the fleet 4 times daily in synch with the updates.
* Open radio channels...
* Honour system and chivalrous behaviour

But how?!

Install the "Adblock Plus" plugin for Firefox (the Chrome version doesn't work for me, if anyone can suggest methods for other browsers please do!)

Add a custom filter for the fleet postions data:

Reload and the fleet disappears. Your boat updates and responds normally. When it's time for the fleet to call in, disable blocking, refresh and then re-enable (stopsign icon in upper right).

This causes no issues on my machine, and shouldn't affect sailport. It would be better to block the request than the response, but I haven't managed that yet.

I'll be racing to these rules, and sleeping at night. All are welcome to join! Post here if you want to be added to the list :-)

Is there rum?
I'm in, although I fear total humiliation. What are the check in times?

Looks like it's shaping up!

Hi Baggus - we're not using the adblocker to block any ads, but to cloak the fleet. With it turned on, you only see your own boat moving. At call in time, you can optionally turn off the filter and let the fleet positions update before going back to sailing solo.

I considered suggesting roll-call only once a day, but with sailors on every continent it doesn't work very well. The updates are a convenient time to allow a peek at the fleet. If we like this style of race then there are other options down the road :-)
Great Idea 76, please count me in. :-)
Is there any way to do this in IE?
we could always use sailtalk, it is seemingly abandoned during the race

Iceland TIMED Race 2023
Welcome to Iceland, where the weather is chilly but there are plenty of volcanoes and beaches to admire along Iceland's beautiful south coast. In fact, our first TIMED race of this year will take us on a 150nm eastbound trip in quick Orange Cats from the Vestmannaeyjaber archipalego to the Stokksnes peninsula. Just mind to enjoy the view from a distance and avoid the temptation to BBQ on the pristine beaches!

Sinbad Surveys Arabia 2023
Sinbad Al-SOL’er invites you to race him on seven epic voyages (5 to count), not entirely in line with those of his illustrious ancestor Al-Sail’or described in the 1001 Nights, and totally out of line with those voiced over by Brad Pitt in Sinbad - The Seven Seas, commencing with a survey of Arabia, from the island kingdom of Bahrain all the way to Aqaba, there where, in 1917, after a desperate forced march, TE Lawrence, Sherif Nasir and Auda abu Tayi routed the Ottomans. Instead of camels through the sand, though, we’ll voyage the c 3000nm across the sea on IMOCA 60’s.
