Page: 1 2 Next

Hi all

First attempt at a proposal here so be gentle. Not quite sure if this is a week or an offshore...

I was looking up the Class40 series after the recent Florida race and saw this and thought it would make a perfect SOL race. Some tight coastal sailing mixed with longer legs and plenty of opportunities to run aground while asleep.

The actual race is being run right now, follow here:
http://www.normandy-race.com/index/carto

I renamed it because I assume that calling it the real thing gets us into trouble somewhere?!??!

Could be held any time through the summer.

Cheers

Blake

Blake - well done! Presented perfectly - you look as if you have been designing SOL races for years :-)

Thank you.. this looks fun...it will make an excellent addition to our "stable".

When I get a mo I will set it up and post a link here so that you (and others) can see how it looks and decide if it needs any adjustment at all. :-D

Thanks!

Instructions were very very clear and I'm a web designer by day so I kinda should be able to something like this. Most annoying things is editing lines in Google Earth, I keep looking for the bezier path tools :-)

Terrific Job! Just a few nuances:

1) Fastnet Rock waypoint is off a bit. Here is the coord: 51.384167, -9.600278

2) Same for Tuskar Rock :
52.202917, -6.207417

3)May want to consider placing a interval waypoint on Land's End. This gives a good opportunity for ranking at a clear headland.

Fabulous job!! This will be a fun mix of technical and open-ocean sailing. Really looking forward to it. WELL DONE!

SP
Thanks for the notes SP

I have adjusted the Fastnet and Tuskar LatLongs, this time I rounded to 3 decimal places rather than 2 so that should be better. I guess these will not show up as actual landforms inside the SOL client. If SOL can use a more decimal places than that then I have put your exact figures in the notes for the waypoint.

I put in one outward Lands End waypoint - I hadn't clicked that boat positioning was measured off them but of course it makes sense. So then I felt slightly evil and decided one big leg where everyone was going all over the place would be quite fun so I left the Fastnet to Guernsey leg long!

And yes the course really caught my eye when I saw it... glad you like it too.

All the best

Blake

PS does this everyone has to let me win it now?
Oops, corrected a typo, v3 below...
WHEN
will you run it RC?
Is there any significance to the fact that the currently running IRL Channel race is ignoring the Fastnet Rock waypoint?
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
Oh yeah, well spotted!

According to the site there's a big depression coming in over Ireland (I could make a cheap joke there, but I will resist) and lots of boats have retired already so they pulled it back:

Current Races:

Auckland to Fiji 2023
Welcome to Auckland and, for the fifth time in Sailonline's history, an epic race to the Melanesian island of Fiji, some 1144nm away. The iconic Steinlager 2 has traditionally been our boat of choice for this event, including in 2020, the last time we raced the course – alone, unaccompanied by a real fleet as it had been #COVID19 quarantined. Alas, this year we will again be racing unaccompanied as low entry numbers has seen the real race cancelled. Hopefully, though, some of the real sailors from the Royal Akarana YC, hosts of the real event, will be joining us online to pit their skills against ours in the ever-changing forecast winds.

Cape Town to Auckland 2023
Welcome to this second RTW race 2023. It's also the June edition of this year's ocean race championship. The course is slightly different from the one sailed in 2020, which then also was part of the RTW series.
This time we will race in the IMOCA 60 foil, as in all RTW races this year. That should guarantee the fun in the South Seas in a truly tough race.
