The first rule of the IMSYC class is "The boat is a monohull with length over all is constrained to LOA≤66ft", Arthur. :-)

Bye,

76: I have all the grib files. Hadn't gotten around to deleting them yet.
Do you really want them?

Why delete them??
I have many races just stored in a zip file ;-)

Yes... infinite drive space has really led to some bizarre habits! heh

The fleet is mostly home. Could you send me another archive AGage? Thanks :-)

edit: or WhyNot! Sorry read too fast

Tom: I think that has to be covered by someone who can calculate the numbers. All I can do is estimate, which you can do yourself....
1) You can hover the mouse over the polar in the client to get this information
2) There is a program available which can load SOL polars (even the IMSYC), display them and also give you exact speed info by holding mouse down over the polar

What a bunch of un-observant, amateur puddle-splashers we are, to have not noticed the elementary fact that a boat cannot sail downwind faster than the wind speed.
Aside from the fact the TWS is in m/s, 6 is not unique in that all columns show this 'feature' - if you look harder you will see all the faster boats have this similar profile (ie Katrinautic?).

Why list TWS in m/s yet SOG in kn?? Well m/s is just as common a unit for TWS as kn is, yet SOG is always specified in kn - I agree it is confusing, but in this case it lets polars use nice round numbers, 2.0 is easier than 3.8868898 ;-)

BUT, as all polars had the same TWSs, it is the curves that describe the performance profile that matter, not the raw numbers, so it doesn't make much difference here.

Still, using tools to view/analyze the polar(s) makes like much easier - and besides, all the polar data was there for all to see/analyse well before the race - and what makes you think no-one noticed this 'anomalous' BS curve and just didn't post about it ;-)

Anyway, these aren't intended to be real yachts... We could create whatever we want in a polar to use on SOL - realistic is nice but not necessary...

Aaron, hunkering down below my desk - with my helmet on, I beg to differ.

The contentious curve (TWS 7.8 kn) in uprisings polar has a a "bulge" between TWA 140 and TWA 180. The boatspeeds there are all the same 9.7 kn. I have never seen a polar like that, and I challenge any designer to design a boat, sailing faster than the wind - within the IMSYC rules - at TWA 180.
And comparing with katrinautic. At twa 180 TWS 7.8 - the katrin does 5 kn. uprising does 10!

I do not agree with tour statement that the "katrin has a similar bulge"!

Still friends - I hope:)
76: How do I send the grib files to you? Do you have a "junk e-mail addy - where you let ppl you don't know send you stuff.
All of the boats are IMSYC-rule compliant by definition. The VPP won't run unless they are.

This has nothing to do with whether a fast IMSYC boat would be fast IRL. The venue isn't Valencia - it's SOL. The boats that I "designed" would be dogs in real water, but they are fast within the rules.

I mentioned in one of the first posts that this exercise is sort of mirror-image to designing real boats. Designing to "rule" you normally want a boat that rates slower that it really is.

The downwind performance of Uprising is a glitch, but it makes no difference to us :-).

Africa by Sea - Tangier to Abidjan

Whatever about pharaoh Necho II’s Phoenician expedition of the 7th C BCE, the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator with more certainty sailed south from Tangier to explore the West African coast two centuries later, but how far he got is a matter of more conjecture. However, if he did the 2300nm to today’s Ivory Coast he would have found little there other than good shelter in the vast lagoons behind the dunes, much the same as today, excepting the highly industrialized port of Abidjan. Not a great haven for a stop-over but let’s take the 90ft Monohull anyway.

Azores Challenge 2025

Another almost forgotten race at SOL. For only the second time we will sail the Jester Azores Challenge route from 2016.
What is the Jester Challenge?
Every two years a group of singlehanded sailors heads for Plymouth to sail the Atlantic. The Jester Challenge is not a race in any way, shape or form, simply an opportunity for skippers to test their boats and their seagoing mettle in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Skippers can make stopovers in other ports or harbours if they so desire, and there is no stigma attached to retiring from the event. Each sailor takes full responsibility for him or herself, their boat and the equipment they carry. There are no entry fees and virtually no rules, although there are guidelines.
Our rules are a bit different and we have a 60ft trimaran at our disposal and we have 1200nm to cover. Let's see what our yachts and their skippers can do. We wonder what you will take on board?

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
