Wind Slider

Hi All
The wind slider is an excellent tool, especially with the (alt/click) 24 hour option.
The 24 hour setting seems to be the more useful of the 2 choices, so would it be possible to make this the default setting and have the longer range the selectable option.

Having come from a Many Players platform to SoL, I have been slowly getting used to the differences. SoL seems to be run by actual sailors (or skilled wannabe's) and seems far nearer to actual sailing.
I agree totally with ShamPir about the new VORG. I too, tried 2 of the betas and he is putting it politely when he says it is cr*p!
I also went back and started the Clipper race with VR, and I had forgotten just how bad it was. Hour and a half late starting (the engine broke!!) then "sailing" along wind squares with 12 hour changes to no discernable wx pattern.
I also got used to (having to) use a router - Zezo, which means that basically you put in the given course at the given time and you climb the rankings! Big deal! Sense of achievement = NIL!
I would love to do the VORG in SoL (or any RTW race) but without the ability (or necessity) to use ANY external programmes!!
I cringe when I see members discussing the merits(?) of "auto helm" and suchlike! You have a VERY good simulation here - don't let anyone spoil it by turning it into a 'mathematical' game!

Types of Race

I'm sorry if I seem to be misunderstanding things, but why does it appear that all of the races have to be based on real-life races?
This being a virtual environment seems open to whatever type of race we could imagine!
Is there some technical reason as to why we could not hold races in places where it would be impossible to hold a real race?
Ideas might include such things as -
sailing in conditions which would not allow real sailing (frozen seas, notoriously high winds)
or sailing where it is not normally feasible (eg. Rialto Bridge, Venice, round Murano Island and back).
I know it doesn't really matter where we sail, but it does add a bit of novelty.
I did like the race to Fowey, even though we all got comprehensively thrashed!!
Please don't take this as crisism, I appreciate the time and effort that goes into organising things like this, so this is merely a discussion subject

Seeing as the last post on this was over two months ago, I may be shutting the stable door ....!
I've been v sailing since Jan this year, so am a comparative newcomer. I try not to take it TOO seriously, but do enjoy the challenge.
There are many differences between VR and SOL, the main ones to me, being cost and accuracy.
Cost - both games are free to enter but VR sells add ons such as auto sails and waypoints which are free with SOL. I did like the fact that the free VR version has 2 sail choices which adds a bit of interest. Similarly, I like the delayed commands in SOL which allow you (after a bit of working out) to plot a course which MAY take you somewhere near where you want to go!
I only bought the "extras" in VR once and it turned out that the race was totally unsuitable for everything but the pro-sails (worth half a knot extra speed )
I think the 35 Euros fro SOL membership is a bit too high, given that all it gives you is a rankings number.
To be honest, I'm surprised that SOL has so few participants compared to VR. However this can be a good thing as long as it doesn't lead to becoming a few personal friends forming a clique (or appearing to).
Accuracy -
Although the "land" is made up of straight lines in SOL, you can rely on the accuracy of the lines to allow you to sail microscopically close and not run aground. This is NOT the case with VR and is the subject of much debate and complaints. The boat positions change every minute and you can actually see yourself racing, which is very good. At the moment all boats are on screen simultaneously, which is good, but could get difficult if membership grows.
The 'live' winds and the scale/duration of the wind forcast is excellent! Far superior to VR. I find it disappointing that the more computer 'savvy' skippers seem to still need external tools to give them an "edge" - even in SOL!
Finally, I would like to support SOL in financial terms but feel that a lower starter fee (say 20 euros) would encourage more people to become members.
The forum should be used more, as it fulfils a far different need than the "chat" which everyone seems to use instead.

Iceland TIMED Race 2023
