    it also very much depends on where you want to go with this game...in the moment its a very niche page for like 100 permanent players...its great that you can play for free, but, no offense, the design of the homepage and the game itself is super basic, like video games of my youth 40 years ago...that has its own charme but is not very attractive for the masses...probably most of the players are intellectuals with a PhD :-) ... I played the timed newport race, and it was ok for 4 hours to sit in front of it and sail, but it needed constant attention...for longer races that's not really doable for most people to tend to their boat 24/7, they need tools to autopilot their boats for a night or a day and still be somewhat competitive...also, I am sure the top players here use their own private weather routers to plot their courses for the multiday races...and without using a router its impossible to win any of the 3+ day races here I would guess...so in order to attract more people you would need to provide some sort of routing help, and a 6h predictor does not really help much in that regard...also, the polar graph is not really helpful as it is, at least for lower windspeeds you cant see anything...an indicator for optimal VMG upwind/downwind would help for example...
    what's really great on the other hand are the races itself and the variety of races and boats...and the different rankings with the yearly champions etc...

    I completely understand that you do not want to completely change the character of the game, these changes would just increase the user-friendliness in my opinion...thanks for keeping it in mind :-)

    hi...I am a newbie and not a SYC member (yet)...and I did only one race yet...and this might have been brought up before...but:
    Two things I noticed and they bothered me a lot:
    1) why does the timepoint for the course change programmation not stay at the point where the course change should take place? as it is now it is impossible to check where you course change takes place which makes the tool halfway useless
    2) why does the predictor not take into account programmed course changes? this makes it impossible to program several course changes after another

    I need to work and I need to sleep and I have a family and a life, so I cant be online 24/7 ... and with the tools as they are in the moment its virtually impossible for me to have any chance in competing because constant attention is required.

    maybe all this is intentional; if not, some improvements to enable better control over tacks/gybes/course changes and easier Programmation / better visualization would go a long way to enable "normal" players to be able to compete...

    Blog post "New HTML5 client"

    Today a button appeared above the usual "GO TO RACE" button. This new button reads "New HTML5 client" and clicking it brings you to the new HTML5 client. You may have heard the rumours that this new client was under development and will eventually replace the Flash client we are used to. As Flash is being phased out it is becoming increasingly difficult to use sailonline in new browsers, so it is vital to have an alternative. Let me take this opportunity to thank our SOLer ij, who has been responsible for the existence of this new client, brightening the future of sailonline.

    We are now making this new HTML5 client available for everyone to use. Be aware that the client is still in a testing phase and that there may still be some bugs and problems with it. The user interface and general functionality are mostly the same as in the Flash client, but you may notice some differences, for example:
    - There are no contour lines indicating wind strength. The client is not completely finished yet and this is one aspect where work is still being done.
    - The TWA input field for steering requires a + or - sign. This should prevent some of the accidental tacks we have probably all experienced when we forgot the - sign.
    - You can monitor multiple chatrooms at the same time. You can now use the chatrooms English and the one for your native language at the same time!
    A longer list of changes can be found here. Use that chat and forum to talk with each other about using the new client and its new features. Some SOLers already have some experience with it and may be able to give you some tips and tricks.

Aland Sea TIMED Race 2023
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. This will be the 6th time that SOL is running this race, and just like its previous iteration almost exactly 2 years ago will be held as a TIMEDrace in pretty Club Swan 50s.

Melbourne to Hong Kong
After celebrating Christmas and New Year it is time for the second run in this year's Ocean Race Championship. After leaving Melbourne on this (about) 5.500 NM course, we will leave the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, all to port. And remember, once again we'll have to choose the best way to cross the Doldrums

Buenos Aires to Rio 2023

This year's second ARCH series race will run from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on a route designed by SOLer Vida_Maldita (under his former alias of zero) in 2013. This is a replica of a classic triennial race of 1200nm, first run in 1947. More information about this IRL race can be found here.
So, Bemvindo/Bienvenidos in this coastal classic and prepare your 90ft Monohulls well.
