    The line between to calculate future changes, or just looking at predictor, wind arrows or present isochrones should divide the SOLers so easily that it should not be hard to define two classes. ???

    Calculate change of direction in advance. That is a huge advantage for those who are able.

    Maybe I'm way off, because everything will be figuring out by the math, I know.

    But I think it would be more fair to us who can't / bothered / have time / will pay for a software router to get a greater chance of getting a place on the podium.

    There will always be someone that defend the routers in a sailing game: Among other things that it is used IRL, and the difficulty of putting a definition between using it, or not. And more.

    This is expressed almost always by those using a router...because of course everyone wants to win! But...

    I think it would not be that hard to identify the "R" sailors and the "L" sailors!
    I've not used any router (yet...) but I think the advantage is that it is possible to predict cog or twa changes in advance, and put them into a delay command, so you can go to sleep or work or whatever. Am I right?
    That is not possible using the Wx Inspector, you have to check it quite often and do the changes "live", not in advance. Also, the isochrones is almost impossible to use as a strategic help just by looking at them. About the predictor line, it is a part of the game so I think we don't have to discuss if that is a router or not.

    Not all races have to be divided in R & L class, but the long ones I think.

    In a race with R & L class you have to decide if using a software router or not. If you register to the R class you may use the router as often or seldom as you wish during the race. If you register to the L class you promise to never use other tools than the "official and free" like Wx Inspector, or brainaid Tools, and those not calculate change of direction in advance. Quite simple roles. Agree?

    I think we can trust people doing a honestly choice.

    If there is doubt, why not testing it by start a non-router-use race without any implementation of changes in the interfaces and databases, to see how people react? Then we can decide to proceed or not.

    Sorry Jen, for you & your daughters loss. I never knew him as a person, but i am confident that if he was as good father as he was as a sailor he was the best :-)
    When he was sailing SOL i allways kept a´n eye for the course AGage was taking, AGage was the first name that i learned in SOL, he was the spirit for me & for lots of other sailors.
    I´m very sad for you & our loss.
    He is an outstanding sailor & i will allways have him in my mind.

Regata dell’Accademia Navale 2025

Welcome to Sailonline’s first partnership with the City of Livorno, in cooperation with the local yacht clubs and the Italian Navy, to offer you the online opportunity to race the Regata dell’Accademia Navale. 630nm in length, starting and finishing in Livorno, the race takes you the length and breadth of the Tyrrhenian Sea via Porto Cervo and Capri. Gulf of St Lawrence 2025

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau


You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
