  • Re: Starting to get over it......SOL
    Board » General Discussion
I completely understand John's position, I started SOL on the 2008 Ocean Race... after a year and half racing here I took a 2-year break from SOL and restarted on leg1 of this years Ocean Race...

Back then we didn't have routers, we knew that brainaid was too far from us using data the way we could or did not know how... back then you could end up 500 or in the top 10 on a single leg

Looking back at the time, I think long races had a wild beauty, the only thing you could do is read statistical data of weather patterns for past years on certain parts of the world and move the slider on the client to see what weather you would have in the coming days...

I understand Aaron's point on the routing issue, I know this has been debated in the past a lot... myself I don't use a router, sometimes I had a look on zezo's charts without however sticking to the proposed route. I think some of us don't have the time, willingness or whatever to get to learn, use a new routing program...

On leg 1 and just before the top100 finished, I asked on chat what do the top100 had in common... Someone answered "dedication" but clearly there's more to that when you see that for 1000miles there are numerous boats with identical or close to indentical routes...

Yes times have changed and most possibly on a long voyage IRL you would also use a routing program... it does not mean however you are a good seaman ;)

Having said the above and speaking for myself, I am not too dedicated anyway, will miss 2 weather updates with the now Dayling savings change of time, so I don't complain... my beauty sleep superceeds the dedication to SOL :)

  • Re: RSL error when loading latest client - post HERE
    Board » Technical Support
I didn't experience any client loading problems on the first release or the latest one... On the previous client I noticed and issue with wind speed... by hovering the mouse on your boat you would get a different TWS than that shown on instrument panel...

Now seems to be fine, although this client release seems just a little heavier than the simpler previous flash client... Just this small remark, other than that look pretty neat and for sure an upgrade to the previous client.

Using Windows 7 and latest Internet Explorer and Flash clients

Yeah stealth mode would take away a lot of the fun and learning, examining, utilizing other sailors strategies, etc.

I think anyway someone following another sailor contantly will become more and more unpopular in the community.

I agree with last post by Paul, a great improvement to the DC feature would be to predict like he said the track if a DC is set... I'm not too sure if it's easy or really difficult with many DCs applied, but would be of assistance and ultimately perhaps increase competitiveness

    Thanks, Alex

Had noticed a member mentioning that but at the time i did not have any similar experience...

However since yesterday i too experience some framerate issues while moving the cursor on map, cursor seems jerky and no fine tuning in order to steer is possible...

anyone have any ideas or similar experience on this?

    thanks

Interesting first race with 4 boats yesterday early evening with Kz7 (Victory), Jakob, NED Arthur and myself ...

Strong competitors and prospective races in future...
    1. Kz7 (victory)
    2. NED Arthur
    3. Jakob
    4. Anemos (alxxx)

I had to take 2 x 360 penalties due to phone calls irl :p

    Stay tuned for future races.

    :)

My opinion is that the magic of SOL and everyone's head scratching on making tactics will be lost with all sorts of tools calculating all sorts of stuff...

When i loose i blame myself or my indedission, if i have so many tools i will blame the program or whoever develops it... I too have respect for brain, because he does real navigation and data utilisation...

I am certain that bringing so many tools that will be out of our knowledge of what they actually do or how they do it will take the game to a different level, certainly will take away the fun part...

I have not been long in SOL, maybe longer than others and witnessed the first talks about router programs and what these new toys were doing... From then to now, judging by the attitude in the chat I think everything has been more serious about their presence in SOL, which is not bad, it's just not my cup of tea

    Friendly rgds

Aden to Goa 2025

Europeans are primarily acquainted with the historical narrative of how spices reached their continent from distant regions. However, the spice trade from Goa to Aden predates the modern era, as detailed in this article. Sailonline is now reversing this route, organizing an eastbound yacht race of approximately 1700 nautical miles across the Arabian Sea for our 21st-century Archer 78 yachts. Wishing you fair winds and may the enticing aroma of spices guide you safely to your destination!

Lake Namtso Ice Race

To kick off our annual Ice Yachting Series, we will travel to Tibet and to one of the World’s highest lakes, Namtso, the “Heavenly Lake”, at an altitude of 4720m. Just fly to Gonggar Airport via Kathmandu, and get a taxi to Lhasa where the Dali Lama lives, then hire a truck with guide to take you and your DN and gear a further 200km north across the Nyenchen Tanglha mountains to Xianga where a 95nm triangle will be beaconed out on the ice for your enjoyment. Although like most of the Tibetan lakes, Namtso is a saline sump with no outflows, rest assured it is bitter cold there and ice is guaranteed. Mind the monks, you’ve no PL!

SOL's gift to the memory of AGagewas a yearlong series of races circumnavigating Australia. This is a TIMED race, so you may RE-REGISTER HERE to try again, after finishing a run. You will have 13 days and 11 hours to test your skill and decision making after the race opens.
