    Well, this race was an interesting one. During and after racing we discussed of what should be the correct course.

    In fact, it was not "around the cans" but inside the cans racing. After thinking again about this course the fastest route would have been a short upwind untill crossing the line between M2 and M4 and, after a turn from close hauled stb to reaching stb, thus leaving M3 to stb, a short downwind to cross the finishline.
    The most eastern island did not even had to be rounded.
    I am not sure what any racecommittee would do here, this sure would raise questions in real sailing too.

    Maybe you have to replace the . with a , in my csv file, depending on language/international settings in Excel.

    I converted the Steinlager polar into a csv file, thanks to Svein for emailing me the raw data.

    This is exactly what I wanted; a nice discussion about the races we sail.
    I did announce that I wasn't going to start in this race, but, as always, my addiction won and I started my boat anyway :-)

    Well, being an F18 sailor, I can not imagine how you guys managed to go around the rocks at 20 kts boatspeed, keep the daggerboards in one piece, do 415 miles without sleep and be able to finish with a smile.

    Well done to all the finishers (I quit after 3 hours) and the course designers.

    I like the suggestion to do this kind of races in several legs, somewhat more in line with reality.

    In my (usually humble) opinion, these kind of races are not suited for SOL, or the other way around.
    SOL is still a navigational simulator.
    Rounding sharp corners at boatspeeds over 20 kts in small waters is simply undoable in SOL.

    However, I always enjoy the longer races. Even more if we can sail virtually against IRL fleets.

    Keep up the good work, SOL is still the best sailing game in terms of strategic sailing.

    Somewhere, somehow, I heared that in some race in I think NZ/Aus there is a trophy for the boat that finishes just 1 place before last?

    I (also) expected the orange dot to stay on place. Eg: when I set a DC to turn around a corner, the dot remains at that place on the predictor-line(s) and I could tweak the time to get a perfect rounding. I found out it just moves along with the predictorline.

    Now that I know, it's ok :-)

    Where to find info on Leg4? I tried these links form the official site, but get only empty pages. No SI or maps that say to go North of Filippines. Not that I care, but I wondered where the course-change-info was coming from?

Africa by Sea - Tangier to Abidjan


Whatever about pharaoh Necho II’s Phoenician expedition of the 7th C BCE, the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator with more certainty sailed south from Tangier to explore the West African coast two centuries later, but how far he got is a matter of more conjecture. However, if he did the 2300nm to today’s Ivory Coast he would have found little there other than good shelter in the vast lagoons behind the dunes, much the same as today, excepting the highly industrialized port of Abidjan. Not a great haven for a stop-over but let’s take the 90ft Monohull anyway.

Sea Lion TIMED Race 2025

Come on down South for long days of sunlight and strong bracing winds to race our Finngulf 43 as many times as you like - 117nm as the albatross flies - through some of the islands of the Falklands archipelago. This is a TIMED race, so you may RE-REGISTER HERE to try again, after finishing a run. You will have 13 days and 11 hours to test your skill and decision making after the race opens.

Azores Challenge 2025


Another almost forgotten race at SOL. For only the second time we will sail the Jester Azores Challenge route from 2016.
What is the Jester Challenge?
Every two years a group of singlehanded sailors heads for Plymouth to sail the Atlantic. The Jester Challenge is not a race in any way, shape or form, simply an opportunity for skippers to test their boats and their seagoing mettle in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Skippers can make stopovers in other ports or harbours if they so desire, and there is no stigma attached to retiring from the event. Each sailor takes full responsibility for him or herself, their boat and the equipment they carry. There are no entry fees and virtually no rules, although there are guidelines.
Our rules are a bit different and we have a 60ft trimaran at our disposal and we have 1200nm to cover. Let's see what our yachts and their skippers can do. We wonder what you will take on board?

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
